Potomac's eighth grade English students read and discuss The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. The book is a series of short vignettes that together capture the characters, setting, and stories of a particular neighborhood in Chicago. The vignettes are written from the perspective of a fictional narrator and are based loosely on Cisneros's own experiences as well as those of her students. Some of the vignettes are humorous or action-packed; some are heart-wrenching or shocking. All are deliberate in their use of figurative language, poetic elements, grammar conventions, and pacing.

Each eighth grader composed at least one vignette for inclusion in this digital collection. They wrote in the style of Sandra Cisneros, as they interpreted it based on their notes and our class discussions, yet they set it in a time and place of their own choosing. While some of these vignettes are based on the author's personal experience, many of them are purely fiction, an imagining of characters and circumstances that seemed ripe for this assignment. Students also used this assignment to experiment with new vocabulary words and techniques involving punctuation and sentence structure.

We encourage you to leave comments below vignettes that strike you in some way. Please keep your comments positive and specific; this is not the place for critiques or suggestions. Enjoy the creativity and vibrancy of these students' literary efforts.

The Broken Link

He had a dog. A nice one, not like the ones that the police use. Her name was Coconut, because she loved coconuts, but she loved her name even more, every time she heard it she would come, even when she wasn’t meant to. They were the best of friends, they went everywhere together.

On a Friday the two were walking together in the dog park. There was a dog across the street. Coconut loved new people and other dogs, so she ran straight for them. Coconut dragged him with her.

The other dog’s owner said, “My dog was coughing was because he has a cold.”

Coconut played with the other dog for a while, but Coconut was too hyper for the other dog. He was coughing and whining, so he had to go home.

When they got home he gave Coconut dinner, she ate a little then fell asleep.

The next day he woke up at 10am. He never slept that late since he got Coconut. He went over to her bed but she was coughing and she looked weak.

He tried to get her to eat breakfast but she wouldn’t eat any.

They went to the vet only to find out that that was no cold that the other dog had, it was kennel cough, and it was contagious. He found out sickness amongst dogs can cause them pain and suffering. The doctor told him that he had to go give her to the kennel. She might not last.

They went to the kennel, all the other dogs coughing. She looked at him, for a moment everything that they had done together. He started to cry. She whimpered. She was put into a cage with the broken link but she was still too weak to get out.

He left not knowing if she was dead or alive.
